10,000 Steps a Day Seem Impossible? It’s Easier Than You Think

It became conventional wisdom in many fitness circles a few years ago that we should all try to take 10,000 steps a day. But is 10,000 really a magical number? It actually is. A study in JAMA Neurology found that walking about 10,000 steps a day was linked to less cardiovascular disease (heart disease, stroke and heart failure), 13 types of cancer, and dementia.Taking 10,000 steps is about the same as walking four or five miles, depending on your stride. If you are having trouble getting in your 10,000 steps here are some creative ways to help you boost your numbers:

1. Give the Dog Walker a Day Off: Many Americans let their dogs out in the backyard for exercise or hire a dog walker. You can save some money and save your lawn by taking your dog for a walk at least once a day. Research shows it’s actually better for your dog as well. Average 2,000 steps (30 minute walk)
2. Grocery Shopping: Yes, we all love the professional shopping services that bring our groceries to our front door but a one hour trip to the grocery store one day a week could add another 4,000 steps.
3. Schedule Walking Meetings: We all spend a fair amount of time in meetings either for work or recreation. While it may seem unconventional, research shows that using this time to walk and talk will keep you healthy, heighten your alertness during your meeting and may actually increase creativity by 81-100%. Plus, you’ll be making more efficient use of your time, our most valuable and nonrenewable resource. So the next time you have a meeting scheduled, grab your sneakers and cell phone and get moving! (Average of 4,000 steps/per one hour walk)
4. Take Your Date Night Outdoors: We all love the romantic dinner date or live concert. But why not keep things fresh by adding a few active date nights. A walk on the beach, a nature walk or even an indoor walk at your local art exhibit or museum are just a few active alternatives. (Average of 4,000 steps/per one hour walk)
