Evidence Mounts In Support of Link Between Diabetes & Alzheimer’s Disease

A recent study, published in the journal Neurology, strengthens the theory that there may be a link between type 2 diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease.

A group of volunteers, 60 and older, were followed for 11 years. In addition to checking the participants’ medical history, the scientists gave them mental exams to determine whether they had symptoms of dementia and a glucose tolerance test to measure whether they had Type 2 diabetes.

Of 150 people with confirmed Type 2 diabetes at the beginning, 41 developed Alzheimer’s, compared to 115 who developed dementia out of 559 non-diabetics. That adds up to 27 percent rate of Alzheimer’s for diabetics, compared to a 20 percent rate for non-diabetics — or a 35 percent increased risk.

“This report is somewhat alarming, especially for those dealing with diabetes. But here’s the good news, exercise and sound nutrition can help,” says Benefit CEO, Bentley Ritter. “Our trainers have the opportunity and responsibility to educate our clients about the increasing dangers associated with diabetes and provide them with the coaching they need to keep their levels under control,” Ritter adds.

The Mayo Clinic offers these recommendations for controlling diabetes and reducing the risk of Alzheimer’s disease:

  • Monitoring your blood glucose, cholesterol level and blood pressure.
  • Eat low fat healthy foods, including fruits and vegetables, lean meats and whole grains.
  • Exercise at least 30 minutes most days of the week.
  • Take prescribed medications on schedule.
