Cold-Weather Fitness Training Tips

Cold-Weather Fitness Training Tips

Winter wreaks havoc on many personal fitness routines. The cold weather makes it far too tempting to snuggle back under the blankets, instead of jumping out and into your morning exercise routine. It’s little wonder that people tend to pack on the pounds during winter, as their exercise schedules fall by the wayside.

You can make sure you stay on track this winter if you keep these things in mind:

1) Exercising in brisk winter weather can actually be invigorating and do wonders for your health. The early morning fresh air can boost energy levels, and banish frustration, and depression.

Ever tried jogging in cool weather? It is stimulating to the senses, and makes you feel more alive!

2) Accept the fact that you might be inclined to skip going to the gym because you don’t want to go out in the dreary weather. Instead, during the winter season, invest in some home exercise equipment. If you’re not sure how to use it, enlist the help of one of our at-home personal trainers.

3) Dress appropriately. You don’t have to bundle yourself up in a thick winter coat, but layering definitely helps. Wear a long sleeve t-shirt, a sweatshirt, and a windbreaker. Wrap a scarf around your nose and mouth, so that you don’t breathe in freezing cold air.

4) Warm up before you step outdoors. At least 5 to 10 minutes of warm-up indoors will help you get acclimated to the weather, before you go out and face the cold. Try starting your fitness training routine by marching in place, dancing or doing calisthenics like jumping jacks.

5) Stay safe. If you want to walk outside, choose safe routes that are familiar to you. Remember, the early morning and early evening hours are much darker during the winter months. Rather than walking alone, consider exercising with a friend or one of our fitness trainers.

Avoid exercising outside on extremely cold days. You should also look out for slippery snow and black ice that could cause you to fall.

Exercising in cold weather can be fun, and can provide a welcome change from the sweaty days of summer. This winter, focus on exercising safely and consistently so you can meet spring feeling fit, happy and healthy!
