9 Healthy Thanksgiving Tips
Here’s something to munch on… the average American can consume up to 4,000 calories during the Thanksgiving meal! You might not be able to skip all of the feasting this holiday, but there’s much that you can do to remain healthy and fit.
Let’s face it. Even the most strong-willed person will end up gorging on pumpkin pie, mashed potatoes and plenty of turkey this Thanksgiving. You must have nerves of steel to resist, not just the food on the table, but also the pressure from family and loved ones to indulge.
What’s the harm after all? Thanksgiving comes around just once a year, right? That one- day splurge, however, could wreak havoc on your waistline.
Take simple steps to minimize the damage this Thanksgiving.
1) On the Big Day, have a healthy breakfast that leaves you little space for binging. Eggs, whole wheat toast, and fruit can fill up your tummy, taking the edge off your appetite later.
2) Don’t fill your plate with a few morsels of every type of food that you can find the table. Simply pick up a few of your favorites. Here’s a simple tip for smart Thanksgiving eating – use a smaller plate and you’ll naturally eat a little less.
3) Slow down on the alcohol and full-fat egg nog. Those beverages can add lots of calories before you know it. If you normally have 2 drinks, just have 1 this year.
4) Eat slowly – you’re less likely to get up for seconds if you take a long time to eat what’s on your plate. Spend more time talking to your friends and relatives. Isn’t that what Thanksgiving‘s all about anyway?

5) You don’t have to deny your sweet tooth altogether. However, cut down on desserts as much as possible, and enjoy in moderation. Don’t give in to the temptation of gorging on every sinful treat that’s offered.
6) Increase exercise a few weeks before Thanksgiving. That will give you a head start, and those thousands of calories that you will down come Thanksgiving, may not make as much of a difference.
Over the Thanksgiving weekend, plan physical activities that the entire family can enjoy. Make time for an early morning walk, or schedule time for a game in the park. Remember, Thanksgiving entertainment doesn’t have to mean endless movie reruns.
7) Turn this year’s holiday into a dance party. Pump up the music, so that everyone is busting out their most energetic moves – with all of the calorie-burning benefits with loads of fun attached!
8) No matter where you’re spending Thanksgiving this year, help out in the kitchen. Wash dishes, or clean up after the meal. These may seem like minor activities, but you’d be surprised at the number of calories they can burn up.
9) If you are a Thanksgiving host this year, be a good host and stock up on healthy options. Choose dishes that are high in taste and flavor, but low on fats. Think more vegetables, salads and lean roasts, and fewer desserts or fried foods.
After all, the best way for you to give thanks for your good health and good fortune, is to ensure that you celebrate in a healthy and responsible manner!
Happy Thanksgiving to all!
